Development of substrates for reconstructed human dermis based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and FucoPol
Skin tissue engineering represents an important tool in various fields such as cosmetic testing
and regenerative medicine. The possibility of reproducing in vitro the fundamental properties of in
vivo skin introduces new opportunities for creating knowledge. One of the techniques employed is
the production of scaffolds to harbor cells, allowing for their proliferation and differentiation into
functional tissues. These scaffolds must have certain characteristics, such as biocompatibility,
biodegradability, appropriate physico-chemical and mechanical properties, ease of production and
cost-effectiveness, all dependent on the material chosen. Thus, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)
represent a potential scaffold material due to all of their relevant characteristics for biomedical
applications. Also, the exopolysaccharide FucoPol can be incorporated with PHA as a blend or
coating, possibly introducing bioactivity to the scaffolds. Therefore, the aim of this work was the
production of scaffolds for reconstruction of human dermis, through the emulsion templating method,
resulting in porous constructs that were tested with human dermal fibroblasts (HDFn).
The scaffolds obtained in this work were based on P(HBHVHHx), a PHA composed of 51 wt%
3-hydroxybutyrate, 18 wt% 3-hydroxyvalerate and 31 wt% 3-hydroxyhexanoate, and had a porous
structure with some interconnected pores. The scaffolds produced through emulsion with water had
mechanical, thermal and physical properties comparable with the scaffolds produced through
emulsion with FucoPol solution, both of them suitable for skin tissue engineering.
These scaffolds were tested with HDFn to assess their bioactivity. In both the cells were able to
adhere, proliferate and differentiate, showing possible extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. The
eight-day assay revealed increased cellular growth and organized ECM deposition in the scaffolds
with FucoPol compared to the ones without. The fourteen-day assay confirmed pore geometry as the
limiting factor for the full invasion of the scaffolds. This work demonstrated the potential of naturally
derived P(HBHVHHx)/FucoPol scaffolds for the reconstruction of human dermis.
a cosmética e a medicina regenerativa. A possibilidade de reproduzir in vitro as propriedades
testadas in vitro com fibroblastos humanos (HDFn).
Introduction: Portugal is one of the European countries with highest consumption rates of antidepressants and anxiolytics. It is known that mental health is influenced by multifarious factors, including socioeconomic, and lower education and income, unemployment and socioeconomic deprivation have a clear impact on depression and anxiety. Though, we don't know how these factors affected these substances' consumption rates in the last decade. This study will help to shed a light in what could be done to improve mental health in Portugal.
Methods: This observational ecological study assessed for associations between socioeconomic and demographic factors and the consumption of antidepressants and anxiolytics, using linear regression analyses.

Music performance anxiety among classical musicians: strategies for improving performance and applications for classical guitarists
Music performance anxiety (MPA) is experienced in varying degrees of intensity by most, if
not all, musicians. It is particularly heightened in a classical music environment and if not
addressed properly, it may cause significant harm to the careers and even wellbeing of
individuals. Performers and teachers usually develop their own valid coping strategies
through years of practical experience, but often lack a theoretical understanding of MPA and
its mechanisms, considering it to be an insurmountable and career ending affliction. There
are several articles and books addressing different aspects of this subject, and this
knowledge can be utilized to develop practice and coping strategies, that incorporate
practical and scientific information. This integration should be of special interest to the
classical musician community in several aspects of performance and pedagogy, and
particularly, for the future generations of musicians who often feel are not being adequately
prepared for the reality of a performing career. Differentiating factors such as personality,
age and gender are related to the way individuals perceive and experience performance
anxiety. Another, somewhat understudied relation, is how the specificities of each
instrumentalist affect, and are affected by MPA. By characterizing classical guitarists and
their particularities, it is possible to ascertain if this sub-group of musicians has specific
needs, and which are the best approaches for them to address music performance anxiety
issues. This dissertation attempts to improve classical musicians’ understanding of MPA and
will hopefully contribute to a more effective approach to this issue within the community; Resumo:
interpretam e experienciam a ansiedade.
Towards Secure, Decentralized, and Automatic Audits With Blockchain
Organizations are testing the potential of blockchain technology in different areas, bringing implications to record-keeping and the associated business processes, namely audits. Permissioned, private blockchain frameworks can contribute to the processes behind audits by (i) alleviating auditor’s work, (ii) hindering fraud and collusion between organizations and auditors, (iii) promote synergies between organizations and their stakeholders, and (iv) protecting access to sensitive information. This paper studies the use of blockchain technology as an enhancer of secure, distributed, and more automatized audits. The proposed solution uses a permissioned, consortium, blockchain to store audit logs. The blockchain is then leveraged to perform distributed and automatic audits over the recorded logs, aiming to reduce costs associated with audits. In particular, the solution is based on a 4-layer architecture: data acquisition, data transfer, data audit, and data analysis & storage layers. The evaluation shows that the proposed solution is secure and can save and analyse up to around 30 audit log entries per second
Evidence from a Vector Autoregressive model
Financial system and economic growth are closely related, since a lot of decades this theme had been the subject of many research. As we know financial system might be divided into two components: the stock market and the banking system. This study tests the relationship between stock market, financial system and economic growth for Portugal, using a quarterly data from 1993 to 2016, which as European country had an economy dependent on bank financing. Meanwhile to reach the central point the variables tested was real gross domestic product, stock market capitalization ratio, domestic credit ratio, investment, and for a control variable is utilized the consumer price index. Performed the unit root test to confirm the integration order and the graphical analysis of the variables is concluded that all are I(1), and they are not cointegrated (Johansen test), Vector Autoregressive (VAR) modeling is carried out, also Granger Causality, variance decomposition and impulse response function are discussed. VAR specification tests express normality, absence of autocorrelation and homoscedasticity. As consequence of the integration in the European Monetary Union, occur the physical replacement of the currency, proves to be an economic regime change but also the subprime crisis was proved. There was found an evidence of Granger bidirectional causality between stock market and economic growth. Indeed, economic growth seems to be favorable to banking system, unidirectional causality running was found from economic growth to banking financing.O sistema financeiro e o crescimento económico estão muito relacionados, sendo este tema alvo de muitas pesquisas nas últimas décadas.
Predicting the number of biochemical transformations needed to synthesize a compound
Exploiting the natural metabolic abilities of microorganisms for the production of bioactive compounds has been a research problem of great interest. The economical and environmental costs associated with petrochemical-derived industries have promoted the emergence of biochemical processes from renewable carbon sources. However, optimally rewiring microbial metabolism in a competitive and sustainable manner is still a challenge. Recently, some retrobiosynthesis tools for the design of de novo biosynthetic pathways have been proposed. These tools generate a large number of intermediate compounds that are beyond experimental feasibility. Thus, effective methods to reduce the number of compounds by selecting the most promising ones are still needed. Here, we propose the use of classification and regression deep learning models, such as fully-connected neural networks and 1D convolutional neural networks, to predict the number of biochemical transformations needed to produce a compound. The data to train and evaluate the models was generated using a set of 13055 reaction rules and 673 compounds from Escherichia coli metabolism as starting compounds. The data was generated up to 5 steps resulting in a dataset of over 2.6 million compounds. This approach can be effectively used in biochemical applications, including retrobiosyntesis, to prioritize compounds that can be produced using fewer biochemical transformations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Este trabalho discute em detalhe as razões e alternativas para a implementação do efeito de “heating by sweeping”The number of magnetic refrigerator prototypes has been increasing in the last decade. The principle of operation is based on the magnetocaloric effect in which the application of magnetic field induces adiabatic variations of temperature. The present work proposes the assembly and testing of a variable magnetic field temperature measurement system, using infrared thermometry, with the follow objectives: (i) making direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect and (ii) observing the thermal phenomenon "heating by sweeping".
With the system ready, the magnetocaloric effect was observed in a gadolinium sample, obtaining adiabatic temperature variations of 1.6 °C in a magnetic field of 1 T. Two thermal processes were observed after the magnetic field application: the heat dissipation to the exterior of the sample and the conduction of internal heat.
Due to the wide profile of the magnetic field produced by the Halbach and the fact that the sample has a reduced length, it wasn’t possible to measure the “heating by sweeping” effect. This paper discusses in detail the reasons and alternatives for the implementation of the "heating by sweeping" effectMestrado em Engenharia Físic
